  2. founders of the modern novel. Pamela 1740-41,
  3. written in the form of a series of letters
  4. and containing much dramatic conversation,
  5. was sensationally popular all across Europe,
  6. and was followed by Clarissa 1747-48 and Sir
  7. Charles Grandison 1753-54. Born in
  8. Derbyshire, Richardson was brought up in
  9. London and apprenticed to a printer. He set
  10. up his own business in London 1719, becoming
  11. printer to the House of Commons. All his six
  12. young children died, followed by his wife
  13. 1731, which permanently affected his health.
